You probably have noticed I have updated my schedule to include Denver. I have been thinking about where I want to go after Denver. My first thought was to head back after Denver then on west to La Grande, Oregon and pickup my current schedule. Now I am having second thoughts and wondering if I want to spend some time traveling around in the middle of the country for a few weeks and just hold off on La Grande for another year or so.
Tonight I set down and tried to map something out but could not make up my mind where I want to go during that period. I guess I will have to spend some more time sorting out that part of my schedule. Once I make that decision I will mention it here on my blog.
Another addition to my schedule has arisen. In May 2007 there will be a Navy reunion in Dunoon, Scotland where some of my old shipmates who were all stationed at the Submarine Base in Holy Loch, Scotland will be gathering. I have decided to attend.
That decision has had me day dreaming about my actual travel plans. The last time I attended a reunion in Dunoon, Scotland was 2001. I stayed a week in Scotland then spent a week in London. This time I am looking at laying over for a few days in Dublin, Ireland (went there back in 1991 and loved it) and even staying a few days in Douglas, The Isle of Man. (I visited there in 1990 and again in 1991).
While I have been day dreaming I have decided I may as well dream all the way. I have been watching the Travel Channel and they have a whole series of shows about cruises. The last time I went on a cruise (civilian cruise that is, not a Navy cruise) was back in 1970. In those days the American cruise lines were all going out of business because of foreign competition. So the Navy was subsidizing the American cruise lines by buying first class passage for service members and their families who were transferring to overseas duty stations. My family and I rode the SS President Cleveland from San Francisco, via San Pedro, California and Honolulu, Hawaii to Yokohama, Japan.
Ever since that cruise I have wanted to do another cruise on a cruise ship. So while I am day dreaming I have decided I might as well dream all the way and dream about how to get to Scotland by one. I have narrowed it down to riding on a freighter. During my research I have found that a lot of freighters have passenger cabins. And more so than a regular crews ship the freighters have single cabins. Which as of this writing is all I need.
Anyway, at this stage it is all dreaming but I have to start planning for my trip somewhere. Might as well enjoy the process.
More about my travel plans to Scotland in future blogs.
